Electrification: Main Areas of Application and Benefits

The fight against climate change and the race towards increasingly sustainable lifestyles are strongly boosting electrification processes. From private homes to large industrial complexes, virtually all sectors increasingly aim to reduce fossil fuel use in favor of renewable resources.
This process requires not only time but also a strong commitment on the part of companies, particularly those directly involved in electricity production and distribution and in the supply of tools, accessories, and solutions for electricity. Companies such as Prysmian, which are fully involved in this transition, are well aware of the benefits of electrification and, precisely for this reason, share the spirit of this process and are committed to playing their part day by day.
In the following, after a quick look at the main resources that can help drive the electrification process forward, we will discover which sectors are most affected and analyze the benefits.

Key Resources for the Race towards Electrification

To replace fossil fuels with sustainable and renewable energy sources, it is necessary to rely on several resources that are now widely known and continuously expanding.

Among the best known and most widely used, including in the residential sector, are photovoltaic solar systems and heat pumps, which respectively provide green energy by exploiting solar radiation and provide environmentally friendly heating systems.

Equally well known are wind power systems, i.e., those that generate energy by exploiting air movement. Generally, wind turbines are placed on large mountainous or hilly terrain (onshore) or marine areas (offshore) and form so-called wind farms.

On the other hand, electrolyzers, complex devices that make it possible to produce green hydrogen, need to be developed and perhaps more well-known to the masses today.

    Sectors Involved

As mentioned at the beginning of this article, electrification processes affect almost all areas of life today.

One of the most obvious and in the public eye is the automotive sector, which is increasingly pushing towards abandoning traditional petrol- or diesel-powered engines in favor of hybrid or 100% electric solutions.

The electrification of industrial processes, one of the main contributors to greenhouse gas emissions into the atmosphere, naturally plays a major role. The possibilities are plentiful here, including a switch to using green energy solutions to power industrial machinery, operate furnaces and boilers, heat and cool rooms, and so on.

Equally important is the role played by the residential building sector. Reducing greenhouse gas emissions and the use of fossil fuels in private homes—through the installation of photovoltaic solar panels, storage heaters, and heat pumps—is a key goal in the fight against climate change, and electrification is a must to achieve this.

Finally, the process of electrification applied to the urban sector is of great importance.

Electrification: What are the Benefits It Will Bring

The electrification process is not an end but is designed to bring long-term benefits to society and the environment.

This shift, based on the use of energy produced through sustainable resources, reduces the use of fossil fuels. This change can help drastically reduce emissions of CO2 and other greenhouse gases into the air and, consequently, combat global warming. Lower emissions also mean cleaner and, consequently, healthier air.

On other fronts, electrification leads to a reduction in costs, an acceleration towards digitization, and the development of energy-efficient solutions.
