Tom Yam: Exploring its Origin, Variation, and More

Tom Yam, or Tom Yum, is considered the National dish of Thailand. Asian food comprises recipes for a wide array of soups of different types, and Tom Yam soup is just one of them. Known as one of the favorites in Thai soup, it is known for its bold and spicy flavor.

Here, let us find out more about the Tom Yum soup and various aspects that are relevant to it.

    Origin of Tom Yam soup

The origin of Tom Yam soup can be traced back centuries. However, the taste and preparation have evolved over the years, yielding a Thai soup that will have your taste buds tingling.

Although its origin is somewhat unclear, it is believed to have originated in Central Thailand. The soup is thought to have been first prepared with shrimp from freshwater, which was abundant in the streams and rivers of the Central part of Thailand.

Previously, shrimp were the main ingredients, but over time, people started adding other ingredients. These included galangals, lemongrass, chili peppers, and kaffir lime leaves.

The origin of this Thai soup is also said to be prepared by the royal chefs of the Ayutthaya Kingdom, which prevailed in the 14th century.

This Kingdom has always been known for indulging in exquisite cuisine and most importantly, the royals used to treat the soup to showcase the delicacy of the local spices that were used in it.

    The Variations

Over the years, the soup has been varied. Most variations have ingredients like fish, squid, shrimp, mushrooms, and chicken. You can serve the soup either clear or creamy. Sometimes, it is garnished with herbs and lime juice.

One of the best variations is the Tom Yam Goong which has shrimp, kaffir lime leaves, lemongrass, lemongrass, lime juice, fish sauce, galangal. This variation is widely known for sour and spicy flavors. But the taste is equally balanced by the shrimp’s sweetness.

Aside from the above, Tom Kha Gai is another variation widely acclaimed for its taste and savor. This preparation includes coconut milk, chicken, lemongrass, galangal, chili peppers, and lime leaves. Although milder in flavor than Tom Yam Goong, this soup is creamier and sweeter.

How Healthy is Tom Yam Thai Soup?

It is a healthy concoction. The soup has less than 100 calories per cup. It also contains shrimp, fragrant spices, vegetables, and lemongrass. Since the soup is also made with wonton and tofu, each known to have adequate nutritional value, it is also lower in fat and calories.

So, with people exceedingly aware of the health benefits of a healthy diet and lifestyle, it is best to include Thai soups like Tom Yam.
