The Color Gamut of a Device Determines Its Ability to Display Colors Correctly

The spectrum of colors visible to the human eye constitutes the color gamut. The term acquires a lot of importance in the context of the ability of modern-day devices can display a wide range of colors. It depends on the technology and the configuration of the devices. Various methods of measuring the color ranges are in place that help create comprehendible color ranges.

The Different Aspects of the Color Gamut

When trying to understand what is a color gamut, it is essential to note that it is not merely the assimilation of colors but much more than what meets the eye. Colors may vary in brightness, saturation, hue, and gloss. The colors we see are reflections of light that reach our eyes. But the way each of us sees colors is entirely different from others. People perceive the same color differently. For example, what appears to be blue to someone might appear black to someone else.

The same applies to the display or screens of devices in how they reproduce or show colors. Most displays have a limited color range, and each device follows one or more color standard that defines its color gamut. Many color gamuts are available, among which one will be your own.

    It’s Different From the Resolution

When shopping for a television, you will pay close attention to the visuals, especially the spectrum of colors reproduced by the device that contributes to the quality of the images and the pleasure of viewing. The colors help produce vivid, life-like images that enhance the viewing pleasure. Once you are aware of the color gamut definition, you can precisely distinguish between the color quality and resolution, which are similar but are quite different. The resolution impacts the sharpness and smoothness of the visuals, while the wide color gamut is responsible for injecting life into the images.

    Standards for Color Gamut

sRGB is the international standard color gamut for PCs prepared by the IRC of the International Electrotechnical Commission, and it’s a standard in the Windows environment. Generally, the configuration printers, LCD monitors, digital cameras, and other devices with a display adhere to the sRGB standard as accurately as possible. By following the standard, it is possible to reduce color discrepancies between the input and output.

    Different Color Gamut Standards

Adobe RGB was established in 1998. The same year sRGB was introduced with Proper implementation of Adobe RGB. It can offer a wider color gamut and display more realistic colors. At the time of introduction, the Adobe RGB was ahead of the times and the technology.

NTSC– the National Television Standards Committee (NTSC) follows its standard of color gamut exclusively for television manufacturers. Despite many similarities with Adobe RGB, the NTSC standard differs in representing the blue and red colors.

DCI-P3 and EBU are the other standards of color gamut.
