Case Study on Apple Watch (7 series)

Apple Watch Series 7 is the latest model of the Apple Watch that was launched in September 2021. The Apple Watch Series 7 features a rounded design that builds on the previous model and offers the user some notable new features including larger displays, enhanced durability, and faster charging. The casings of the Series 7 Apple Watch are improved with softer, more rounded edges, and the watch faces are 1mm larger than the ones on previous models. Series 7 models feature black ceramic and sapphire crystal backings, as well as a Digital Crown with haptic feedback. ECG readings can be taken with the Digital Crown’s built-in sensor.

Retina displays are more screen-efficient due to slimmer borders on the new models, which have a larger screen area. A unique feature of this display is its refractive edge, which almost curves into the case. Taking advantage of the larger displays, the interface has been improved and two new watch faces have been added. A crack-resistant front glass, IP6X dust resistance, and water resistance rating of WR50 make the Apple Watch Series 7 more durable than previous models.

    Display

This new Apple Watch is equipped with a larger screen, which is almost 20 percent bigger. The reduced border on the Apple Watch Series 7 is 40% smaller than the one on its predecessor.  A slight curve around the top of the glass is designed for the new display. Apple Watch Series 7 includes OLED ultra-low-power temperature polysilicon and oxide display allowing the watch face, complications, and other information to remain visible using Always-On functionality, all without the switch-off feature. Watches dim their displays while their wrists are down for battery conservation, while key features like their hands are always visible.

    S7 Chip

Apple Watch Series 7 is powered by a dual-core S7 System in Package, which is based on the S6 processor from Apple Watch Series 6 and offers similar performance.

In Apple Watch models, apps can launch up to 20 percent faster with the S6 Sip chip than with the S5 embedded in previous generations, the Series 7 of Apple Watch also has the same feature.

    Design of Apple Watch 7

Several years have passed since Apple last updated its smartwatch design. With its rounded, square shape, the Apple Watch Series 7 builds on previous generations, while also offering new casing sizes 41mm and 45mm for wrist sizes and preferences. Series 7 of the Apple Watch has been refined with rounded edges and softer materials. Although the cases are slightly larger than previous generations, they will still work with previous bands.

The weight of each Apple Watch varies based on size and casing material, with stainless steel being the heaviest. The weight has increased slightly compared to previous generations.

Each Apple Watch Series 7 model has a black ceramic and crystal back which houses four LED clusters and four photodiodes that assist in health monitoring such as heart rate monitoring, blood oxygen monitoring, and ECG monitoring. Apple Watch has a Digital Crown for navigation, and a Side Button for accessing frequently used apps, accessing emergency services, and confirming Apple Pay purchases. With the Digital Crown, you can scroll through lists and control various aspects of an Apple Watch, and it’s vital for the ECG app as it has a built-in electrode that pairs with the rear sensors.

Depending on the Apple Watch model you purchase, the Digital Crown may look different. Digital Crowns on LTE models are red, so you know they have LTE, while GPS-only models lack that red ring.

    Colors and materials

Series 7 of the Apple Watch is available in three materials: aluminum, stainless steel, and titanium. Aluminium Apple Watch models are the least expensive, while titanium models are the most expensive.

    • The company released four new aluminum Colors this year- Midnight, Starlight, Green, and Blue.
    • There are three stainless steel models of Apple Watch available- Silver, Gold, and Graphite, which is a deep Gray Color.
    • The titanium models come in natural Color (Gray silver) as well as Space Black.

Features of the New Apple Watch 7

    • Display borders on Apple Watch haven’t been changed in several years. Apple Watch 7’s display is now 20% larger than Apple Watch 6’s. A 1.7mm bezel makes the Apple Watch appear larger than last year, despite the same size chassis.
    • This new Apple Watch has a 70% brighter display than previous models. This is a big claim, and we’ll have to see how accurate it is, but last year’s 50% brighter screen did make a difference when compared to the Apple Watch 5.
    • Series 7 Apple Watches come with the W3 chip, and two variants are available: GPS and GPS + Cellular. Cellular GPS models have their own LTE chip, which allows them to connect to LTE without an iPhone, but GPS models have only Wi-Fi.
    • Series 7 of the Apple Watch continues to provide an 18-hour battery life on a single charge. Due to Apple’s Magnetic Fast Charger USB-C Cable and new charging technology, the device can now be charged 33 percent faster than Apple Watch Series 6. While on a call or while exercising, the Apple Watch may drain faster.
    • The Apple Watch Series 7 continues to support Apple Pay purchases, emergency calls with SOS like previous models, and has similar health features as previous models, such as blood oxygen monitoring, ECG, sleep tracking, fall detection, and loud noise detection.

    Conclusion

Compared with the Apple Watch Series 6 launched a year ago, the new Apple Watch Series 7 represents a relatively small upgrade. The largest and brightest screen here is the main highlight of this watch, although faster charging is also welcome. No new hardware-based health features are added here, so the overall takeaway here is the bigger and brighter screen. The keyboard and revised interface may appeal to power users, while a device with a glass front provides extra toughness.
