About the Company
Netflix Inc, commonly popular as Netflix is a video rental and media streaming company founded by Marc Randolph and Reed Hastings in 1997. The corporate headquarter of Netflix is in Los Gatos, a city in California. The company is also famous for creating originals.
An online subscription was offered by Netflix in 1999. The television and movie title was chosen from the Netflix website and mailed to the concerned client in the form of Dvd along with envelopes for prepaid return from one of the many distribution centers. There was a limit to the monthly subscription as well, depends on individual plans.
It was in 2006 when the company came up with a contest worth USD 1 million which was won by BellKor’s Pragmatic Chaos in 2009 for suggesting Netflix improve its algorithm of recommending by 10%. It was in 2007 when Netflix allowed its subscribers to view limited shows and movies through the Internet on their television. The streaming service was unlimited for most of the subscription plans. To enable video streaming through the internet over maximum devices, Netflix partnered with players of Blu-Ray Disc, video game consoles, and many other electronic products consumers. Early Original Context by Netflix
A prominent role has been played by Netflix when it comes to the distribution of independent films. Sheerybaby and Born into Brothels are among many other independent films distributed by Netflix by partnering with its Red Envelope Entertainment Division. Red Envelope later partnered with John waters for expanding the production of original content. To avoid competition in 2008 with its studio partners, Netflix closed Red Envelope Entertainment.
Rebranding and Global Expansion
By April 2014, Netflix had over 50 million subscribers from 41 countries globally. It came up with a new website- UI, along with a new logo which no more had a drop shadow in June 2014. After the release of Daredevil, Netflix added audio description and screen reader support to help narrate the visually impaired and blind. In the consumer’s electronic show in 2016, the firm announced its service expansion further to 150 countries. They even came up with VPN blocking of VPNs, to allow people to stream in the countries where Netflix is banned. Currently, Netflix has a presence in 190 countries.
