On February 22, 2023, almost two years after its initial announcement, Sony will release the PlayStation VR2 headset in the US for $550. Sony said the $550 bundle would include two tracked, portable PS VR2 Sense controllers and stereo headphones. The exclusive VR title Horizon Call of the Mountain will be going to be part of a $600 bundle.
At first glance, the $550 asking price for the initial PlayStation VR in late 2016 appears to be a significant hike from the $400 asking price. But even that analogy may be slightly inaccurate. First, after considering inflation, $400 in October 2016 is equivalent to around $490 today. Second, several games on the initial PlayStation VR needed two PlayStation Directional buttons and a monitoring camera.
Comparison
When the first PSVR was released, those add-ons were either available separately or included in a $500 bundle (equivalent to around $613 today). On the other hand, PlayStation VR2 uses inside-out monitoring and comes with two hand-tracking controllers. Therefore it does not need an additional camera.
The PS4 and the first PlayStation VR titles will not function with Sony’s new headset. In addition, Sony today revealed 11 brand-new PSVR2 games that will debut in 2023. Six of the games above have already been revealed. As of November 15, they will be pre-orderable along with the PSVR2 hardware, indicating that they will be accessible at or shortly after the headset’s release.
Titles are:
- The Light Brigade
- Cosmonious High
- Cities VR
- Hello Neighbor: Search and Rescue
- Tentacular
- Zenith: The Last City
Most of the important details about the PSVR2 headset’s specifications, like its 2000 x 2400 OLED per-eye display, 110-degree field of view, 120 Hz maximum frame rate, and headset vibration, were already made public by Sony. Additionally, the headset has a streamlined single-cable controller connection with cameras for eye-tracking and a pass-through view of your surroundings.
