Your Guide to Starting a Small Business

In the United States alone, there are almost 32 million small businesses registered with the Small Business Administration, and that number continues to grow over the years.

This number can feel overwhelming, but try to take it as a positive! It means that, although starting a small business isn’t easy, it is very much possible.

Becoming a business owner takes is a bit of know-how and a lot of hard work. But you can do it, and we’re here to help.

Outlined below is a guide to starting a business, including the steps you need to take to find success. Read on to learn everything you need to know.

    Flesh Out Your Idea

The first step in building a small business is to fully flesh out your idea. It’s unwise to start running without first knowing which direction you’re going to go.

What type of business do you want to make? Where do your passions lie? What can you offer the world and who needs it?

Be honest with yourself and be sure that you’re ready for the stresses and responsibilities that come with being an entrepreneur before taking any further steps.

    Make a Plan

Once you have a thorough knowledge of the direction in which you’re going to go, it’s time to make a plan. This step will take the longest, as running a business will be much easier if you’ve laid out a map for yourself and your business’s growth beforehand.

Look into what your competition is doing, where are they failing? What can you do to improve upon their strategy?

Create a company description, a mission statement, and outline the problem your business will solve. Learn the ins and outs of your target audience. Who are they? What are they looking for? Which type of marketing will be most effective with this specific demographic?

You’ll also need to hammer out the financial details. Do you have the money to fund the initial investment yourself, or will you need to take advantage of SBA loans? Include both one-time costs and recurring expenses in your budget.

    Choose a Name and Location

When you’re starting a business, your company name can make or break you. Your name should be unique and personal to you while being memorable and easy to spell. Make a list of possible names, then check trademarks and social media sites to choose one that isn’t already in use.

Last but not least, decide on a business location. Will you have an office? A retail location? Will you work out of your home?

Wherever your business will be located, make a list of the necessary equipment for your specific idea and confirm that you have everything you need to get started.
