More and more Amazon staffers are toggling the green “open to working” button on LinkedIn. It is being observed that even before the tech professionals are laid off, most are looking for Plan B in their careers.
Since there are rampant job cuts across the tech, finance, and other sectors, most people who sense they are at risk of losing their jobs to mass layoffs, are already planning to skip the firing and get hired directly instead.
Career Cushioning at Amazon
The process known as career cushioning is working out a Plan B while still employed. This is unavoidable, especially when layoffs are at their peak. This is taking in the form of a discreet lunch over networking meetings and calls. Alternatively, connecting with old colleagues works well too.
Bloomberg News reports that a few employees at Amazon.com Inc are resorting to this process. They are posting publicly that they are Open To Work on the largest professional website LinkedIn, while they are still on the payroll of Amazon. The move will allow everyone to see their stance right from the bosses and their bosses.
Why did Employees take this Step?
The unease started when the company based in Seattle stopped recruitment a few weeks ago. In the initial round of layoffs, many survived the job cuts. However, with the announcement of mass layoffs of as many as 18,000 jobs, workers are not taking any chances. Amazon said that it was not an easy decision to lay off workers.
What does Amazon’s CEO have to say about Layoffs?
Says Andy Jassy, the Chief Executive Officer of Amazon, in a note that the company does not undermine the impact that these job cuts might have on employees’ lives, or they do not take such decisions lightly. The upcoming layoffs that Amazon will work on include workers in the Technology, Experience, and People department.
The CEO also said they are working to extend support and offer separation payment, external job placement support, and transitional health insurance. However, Amazon did not want to comment any further.
Career Cushioning by Kayla Look
One such employee of Amazon, Kayla Look, has posted her resume on LinkedIn and said that although she prefers to continue working at Amazon, she is open to new opportunities. She is a recruiting coordinator at Amazon herself. Many were encouraged to follow the same path by looking at her job posting on LinkedIn.
Amazon has as many as 1.5 million employees. The role of a recruiter is quite challenging, Bloomberg News reports. At Amazon, the employees working as recruiters have multiple roles to play. It might range from working with highly technical specialties to conducting in-depth interviews and following a rigorous schedule.
Bloomberg News reports that the post of Kayla Look is just one of the dozen posts of current employees of Amazon available on LinkedIn.
