Knowing what is emotional intelligence should help you maintain better interpersonal relationships in all walks of life. Everyone possesses various degrees of emotional intelligence (EI), also known as emotional quotient (EQ) that helps them manage their emotions and express them in helpful and respectful ways for those around them. The ability to understand the emotions of people around you and respond with encouraging and supportive feedback stems from your EI. The way you express yourself by demonstrating self-awareness and managing your emotions while being empathetic to others points to your level of EI. It helps you maintain healthy relationships with everyone you engage with. Improving your emotional intelligence helps build better relationships as you become more acceptable to others due to mutual respect.

How to improve your EI by knowing what is emotional intelligence

As much you want others to understand you, they also have the same desire, and better is the mutual understanding by recognizing and respecting the emotions, healthier is the relationships. Most importantly, you must have the ability to feel the same way the other person is feeling which shows your empathy. However, EI is much more than playing on your emotions and managing them for building rapport and conflict resolution. You must be aware of your emotions and keep them under control to balance them well to improve your maintaining healthy relationships.

    Recognize your emotions

Look inwards to identify your feeling at any time, which is the first step in improving your emotional intelligence. By practising mindfulness, you will gain perspective of your feelings to focus on the positives by managing the negative feelings. As you become more aware of your feelings, you will better understand talking to others and even yourself. Being mindful about the words you use helps develop empathy which strengthens your relationships and helps create new ones. Whenever you experience strained relationships, look at your emotions and those of others to fix the problem.

    Be honest about your feelings

Improving your emotional intelligence does not mean denying your feelings. Never feel wrong about your emotions because they are there to help you. But you should honestly admit how you feel. Start by validating the feelings that help you validate the emotions of others, and it’s critical for practising empathy. Being curious about your emotions lets you interrupt the current wave of feelings to solve whatever has been a cause of concern for you. Having an open mind to understand your feelings will better understand how others are thinking, reasoning, and feeling.

    Improve your self-confidence

Self-confidence is the most critical component in learning how to improve your EI. Having high self-belief to overcome any situation is vital. To achieve success, trigger positivity by thinking about what you gained by handling similar feelings. Keep rehearsing how you would like to manage difficult emotions in the future to stay prepared for your feelings. Your previous successes provide the foundation for making you more confident about yourself and improving your EI.

    Adapt self-awareness

To improve your EI, you should know yourself better. The better you know about your emotions, the more efficiently you can manage them and improve your interpersonal relationships with those around you. Embark on a life-long journey of self-discovery by embracing your feelings. To manage your emotions in the best way, you must have complete clarity about yourself. Self-awareness is the key to improving your EI as you become more self-accepting, increasing your empathy towards others. It will help you understand the emotions driving you instead of being impulsive, which makes you appear unreasonable.

Stay tuned to what others are feeling

Once you know what is emotional intelligence, it helps to transform relationships by making them more transparent and developing trust. When you turn your attention to your feelings, it will automatically make you sensitive about other people’s emotions.
