How Machine Learning Helps Prevent Species Extinction

Although scientists currently know very little about many of the Earth’s species, we know that many of them are already in danger of going extinct. These lesser-known species are at significant risk, according to a recent study that used machine learning.

Because scientists haven’t been able to learn enough about some animal and plant species to comprehend how they live or how many are left, environmentalists have given them the moniker “data deficient.” Unfortunately, it turns out that those “data-poor” species are far more endangered than other, better-known species. The International Union for Conservation of Nature maintains a global “Red List” that assesses species according to their threat.

What are Endangered and Threatened Species?

A century ago, North America was home to a bird known as the passenger pigeon. People frequently witnessed enormous flocks of pigeons flying overhead. There isn’t a single one left. What took place?

Passenger pigeons are no longer around. Passenger pigeons that were still alive vanished totally from the planet. For two causes, the passenger pigeon went extinct. First, farms and settlements were built over the woodlands where it once thrived. Second, a lot of pigeons were shot for food and entertainment. There were no hunting regulations to save endangered species back then like today.

In the United States today, more than 1,300 species are endangered or threatened. Plants and animals that have become so scarce that they are at risk of becoming extinct are considered endangered species. Plants and threatened animals have a good chance of going extinct in the near future throughout all or a sizable portion of their range.

    How does Extinction happen?

As a result of human activity or natural forces, species are vanishing. A natural disaster can occasionally wipe off an entire species. Other times, extinction will occur gradually. For instance, many species perished after the Ice Ages when glaciers retreated and the world warmed up. They were replaced by newer species that could endure in a warmer climate.

Animals and plants can potentially become extinct as a result of human activity. There are many threatened species today primarily due to human interference with their essential habitats or homes. A habitat comprises the nearby plants and animals and all the elements necessary for the species’ existence, such as food, shelter, sunlight, and wind. The United States is home to various environments, from mountaintops to seaside beaches. Every species needs a specific habitat to survive. For instance, a cactus requires a dry, sunny desert to develop. On the other hand, a polar bear couldn’t survive in a desert since there wouldn’t be enough food and water for it.

Why Protect Endangered and Threatened Species?

The Cactus in the desert and the wildlife we have to make the earth more intriguing and lovely. More crucially, the life of all living things, including humans, depends on interdependence. For instance, all species that depend on a fish, like the shortnose sturgeon, will suffer and can end up being threatened or endangered.

We all rely on flora and animals. We have learned new tech for producing clothing, food, and buildings through studying them. Scientists have figured out how to treat patients with plants and animals. We won’t know how endangered and threatened species would have enriched our lives if we didn’t protect them.

We must assist threatened and endangered species. Governmental organizations like the United States Environmental Protection Agency

How to save animals from extinction through Machine Learning?

    1. AI can help with Tracking Endangered Species

It is not only hard to capture perfect footage, but it is also challenging to avoid distortions of the image or other unusual behavior features associated with a particular species, counting their exact number when Antarctic penguins form a close group is sometimes difficult.

One of the problems that AI-based image identification can help with is these. The algorithm scans thousands of photographs of the animals to understand what an Antarctic penguin looks like from all angles. AI can distinguish between individual penguins in the image and count their exact number based on information about the bird’s distinguishing characteristics. We must know how to save animals from extinction. In this regard, machine learning is very essential for us.

    2. AI can help with Forecasting Natural Disasters

Natural disasters often cause significant harm and losses to both humans and animals. The system for alerting and responding to it is currently underdeveloped, which is the issue.

However, researchers have discovered that artificial intelligence will now make it possible to examine data based on weather events and natural disasters in particular places that are to uncover potential weaknesses. The AI-powered technology will deliver a warning beforehand and enhance a reaction to emergency information.

With the help of this new AI program, society will be able to care for the animals in the projected attachment zone and prepare for a potential natural disaster.

    Conclusion

Scientists and researchers are constantly attempting to develop a machine learning system to protect animals. Forest rangers are using their technologies to assess forests with artificial intelligence. Patrolling in critical situations is made easier by doing this.
