What is Smog?
Smog is a mixture of smoke and fog. It is caused by excessive air pollution. The term “smog” was coined in the early 1900s.
Smog is classified into two types:
- photochemical smog
- sulphurous smog
Smog is caused by what?
Smog is caused primarily by nitrogen dioxides, sulphur oxides, ozone, smoke, coal combustion, vehicular emissions, forest and agricultural fires, and other particulates in the air that combine with moisture.
Today, we are primarily seeing photochemical smog.

Sulfurous smog was first observed in London on December 5, 1952. It arose as a result of the high concentration of sulphur in the air.
Photochemical smog is prevalent in countries such as China, Mexico, and Poland.
The government tried a variety of approaches to address it, such as reducing the number of cars on the road, inspecting vehicle health, and considering the use of gas instead of wood, among other things.
