Sulfurous smog was first observed in London on December 5, 1952. It arose as a result of the high concentration of sulphur in the air.

Photochemical smog is prevalent in countries such as China, Mexico, and Poland.

The government tried a variety of approaches to address it, such as reducing the number of cars on the road, inspecting vehicle health, and considering the use of gas instead of wood, among other things.
