UN gives warning about catastrophic warming of 2.7° C

    Article Overview

The United Nations has issued its latest assessment related to national climate pledges just before the Glasgow summit, as per Bloomberg News. The world is heading towards global warming and at catastrophic levels, despite a series of national climate pledges as stated in the report of the United Nations.

Unless countries do not take a stand about reduced emission targets, the world will be warmer by 2.7 degrees centigrade by 2100, as per a study that was released by the Glasgow climate summit Monday.

The increase that is being slated to be witnessed will be more than the goal of restricting warming at 2 degrees centigrade. It must preferably be at 1.5 degrees centigrade, which was decided upon at the Paris Agreement and the one that was signed by all nations in 2015.

According to Bloomberg News, global warming of 2.7 degrees centigrade as compared to the preindustrial levels, which is about 5 degrees Fahrenheit would be disastrous for the planet when it comes to reshaping it. At 2 degrees centigrade, a severe heatwave that is expected to occur twice in a century would take place 14 times as frequently. Agricultural droughts would be at 2.4 times as frequent as the oceans and seas continue to eat away into the coastal areas and cities, as per the UN report that was published in August.

The world has heated up already by 1.1 degrees centigrade since the time of industrialization. This has led to extreme weather conditions on every inhabited continent, resulting in wildfires and floods.

Analyzing the national pledges is one among the many spates of reports that are expected to be discussed before the commencement with the diplomats before the UN talks begin on October 31st. At the summit, it is being anticipated that they will take up stronger responses to climate change

A separate report was published Monday which indicated that the rich countries will meet their goals of extending $100 billion in financing climate issues related to the poor nations only by the year 2023, which is 3 years later than what was promised.

These funds are regarded as crucial so that more so-called green action can be unfolded across the globe, Bloomberg News reports.

As per the UN framework that has been set out in Paris accord, all signatories must inform what steps they are taking to reduce the emissions by the year 2030. The report made available Monday is a summary of these reductions and is being used to compare the result against the path that the nations must meet to fulfill the Paris goals. The projections remained unchanged as of September in the last UN update.

The International Energy Agency, in a separate analysis looked into those pledges that are going out to 2060. This also included net zero commitments from most of the economies around the world. It concluded that delivering along those lines would bring back the Earth on track by 2100 to 2.1 degrees centigrade. The calculation, however, assumes that the emissions would be reduced in the short term so that the long-term goals can be achieved.

Monday’s report highlights the gap that needs to be filled and for doing so, the negotiators will have to sit and work out a deal that would ensure that the world gets back on its tracks. However, it is quite unlikely that the nations would reach a deal when using coal could be phased out, however, a compromise could be reached, nevertheless, says Bloomberg News.

The National climate plans, however, have to signal the most basic indicators that progress is taking place and that is by reducing the rate of emission of greenhouse gas.

According to an update that has been issued by the UN World Meteorological Organization, the levels of carbon dioxide, methane, and nitrous oxide have reached 149%, 262%, and 123% of the 1750 levels in the atmosphere. The report is a stark message for the negotiators around the globe for climate change.
