5 Tips for Maintaining Your Car’s Spark Plugs

Your car is composed of both small and large parts that make it run. Among these smaller parts are the spark plugs, which produce the literal spark that ignites the air-fuel mixture. Without spark plugs, your car wouldn’t start at all.

So if you want your car to start, you have to take care of the spark plugs. With proper maintenance, your vehicle will run smoother and last longer. Here are some tips to maintain your spark plugs:

Choose the right spark plugs for your car

If you bought a new vehicle, the stock spark plugs are likely “standard” ones that come with copper electrodes. Because of the high conductivity of copper, these spark plugs perform great in situations that require more power. They also don’t overheat as often.

However, copper spark plugs usually last only for 30,000 kilometres or so. If you want something more long-lasting, iridium and platinum are your best options. Platinum spark plugs can last up to 90,000 kilometres.

Of course, the “best” spark plugs will always be subjective. Your car’s manufacturer will also have a recommendation. If you’re at a loss, check your owner’s manual and follow the suggestion there.

Do note that it’s best to replace all of the spark plugs at the same time to make things simpler and easier to remember. Most vehicles have four spark plugs, one for each cylinder of the engine, so be prepared for the cost. Make sure to purchase from a reliable auto parts seller in New Zealand for guaranteed quality products.

Inspect and clean the spark plugs regularly

While spark plugs are replaceable, you don’t have to get new ones immediately after only a few kilometres of driving or at the first sign of engine trouble. Instead, you should conduct regular inspections and see if the spark plugs have a buildup of carbon, oil, or other contaminants.

If so, you can clean them using a wire brush. Carefully remove the spark plugs, soak them in rubbing alcohol or an appropriate cleaning spray, and remove the crusted deposits. Once they’re clean, place them back in and test your engine.

That said, you should also know when cleaning won’t be enough to restore a spark plug’s performance. If the deposits are too thick and difficult to remove, if there are any cracked parts, or if the electrodes are burned, no amount of cleaning will work. Get new spark plugs and install them ASAP.

    Check the ignition coils, too

If you have an older-model or high-mileage car and you bring it in for a routine inspection, make sure that your mechanic also checks the ignition coils. These components can last for up to 100,000 kilometres or more.  And depending on how often and how far your drive, you can rack up this mileage in about 4 to 7 years.

However, there are some circumstances that warrant an early replacement of the ignition coils and most of these overlap with issues that require you to get new spark plugs. If you have the parts changed at the same time, you can save on labor costs.

    Look at the spark gap

The spark plugs in your car have an ideal gap between the centre and side electrodes. Too wide of a gap can result in misfires, while too small of a gap may lead to a weaker spark or insufficient time to properly start the combustion process.

Fortunately, there are tools that let you check the proper measurement of the spark gap. You can also find instructions online on how to gap spark plugs. If you aren’t that confident about your skills, you can always take your car to a garage and have it serviced by professional mechanics.

Know the signs of a bad spark plug

Last but certainly not least, you should be aware of the common signs of spark plug trouble so you can have them cleaned or replaced on time. Some warnings you should watch out for include:

    • Difficulty in starting your vehicle. If you’re having a hard time getting your car’s engine to “fire” or if you’re feeling your car jerk whenever you start the engine, your spark plugs may be due for a replacement.
    • Poor fuel efficiency and performance. Old or defective spark plugs are usually unable to provide complete combustion. Thus, your car will consume more fuel and will perform poorly overall. You will notice the biggest difference when you’re trying to accelerate.
    • Knocking noises. When your car’s spark plugs misfire, you’ll hear knocking or rattling sounds. These noises are often caused by too much heat and/or too much pressure.

If you want your drives to remain safe and comfortable, you need to take care of your entire vehicle. Spark plugs may be small, but they’re crucial to your car’s smooth operation. Take note of these tips so you can keep your car’s spark plugs in good shape.
