Bob Dylan’s new book, The Philosophy of Modern Song, is a collection of essays on sixty-five great songs. The book explores the fascinating powers of those songs.
Dylan, who received Nobel Prize in 2016 for his contributions to literature, worked on the observation and study of the philosophy of the songs for over a decade.
Bob Dylan started his career in the 1960s and sold over 125 million of his records globally.
The folk-rock legend of eighty-one years released his thirty-ninth album in 2020, named Rough and Rowdy Ways. But he is not yet tired but continuing a world tour which will end up in 2024.
What is in the book
He described Cheaper to Keep Her by Johnnie Taylor, subjecting lawyers, wrote a paragraph piece on Little Richard’s Long Tall Sally where he praised Richard on his diversity, and also wrote on Ricky Nelson’s Poor Little Fool, among other songs. Many of Dylan’s writings in The Philosophy of Modern Song were in prophetic riddles. Dylan’s interpretation of the 1960 hit number My Generation by The Who is like something that does not favor anyone and doubts everything. The Nobel laureate opened up about his views on generation change and getting old in the song.
About Strangers in the Night by Frank Sinatra, the famous American musician and poet Dylan riffed on what the song says about love and life. Dylan explains that the feeling and emotion of love are essential to cheating death and staying alive.
Dylan’s new writing after Chronicles: Volume one, which came out in 2004, comprises essays accompanied by riffs, as Dylan’s publisher names those, or even shorter and looser. Those types of essays cover up half of the book, and Dylan talks about the spirit and philosophy of the songs there.
The Philosophy of Modern Song includes musings on Nina Simone and Hunk Williams, among other artists.
When will the book be published?
The writing which will be brought out next month has a few songs by Dylan himself, and he has analyzed the craft of writing every particular song. Fans were treated with a glimpse of the new book by the folk-rock legend, and it is all set to come out on November 8 with the US-based publishing house Simon and Schuster.
