The 2 Things You Need to Do before Your Cross Country Move

Any move can be bad for your mental health, even if you are only moving across town. A cross-country move can be downright dangerous since it can be so stressful. There are a lot of moving parts that need to be coordinated to make sure that things go smoothly. For instance, you’ll need to ensure that your movers and auto shipping are coordinated so everything gets to your new home promptly.

This means that you have to understand what you’re getting into. The more you understand then, the more you can try to prepare so there are no surprises. However, for the best hands-off experience, it’s best to work with reliable cross country moving companies. In this article, we will go over several things you should ensure you take care of before you make your move.

1 – Get your utilities moved

One of the worst things that can happen when you move is arriving in your new home without electricity, gas, or internet. If you decide to turn them on when you arrive, you could be without those utilities for weeks or more.

The best thing you can do is make the switch ahead of time. Give yourself plenty of time to call them and ask them what the process is like to move your service to a new location. It can happen in a matter of days. For others, it can take longer.

The sooner you get started, the better. Especially since you may need to cancel your utilities and sign up with a new provider at your new location, not all of them operate in the area where you will be moving to. You may have to start fresh with all new utility providers.

    2 – Downsize

Moving is very expensive, and the more stuff you have to move, the more it is going to cost. Chances are pretty good that a lot of the things you are moving you haven’t even seen in years since you packed them away in the closet. This means that you don’t need that stuff and paying for it to be moved doesn’t make much sense.

The key is to start downsizing long before the move. You need to take stock of everything that you have to make a list of what is coming and what is staying. It takes prioritizing specific categories so you should make a list of things you need, things you want, and things that have to go.

Make sure the things that you need make it to the new destination. That part is easy. The hard part is trying to let go of the things that you want that may not be practical to take. The other easy category is the stuff that should be donated, sold, or thrown away. You can hold a yard sale, get rid of many of your things, and help pay for the move.
