A student of the University of Virginia allegedly shot three footballers and two other people on Sunday. The incident, in which the three players died and two others were injured, took place in Charlottesville, the university’s main campus. Police took a student in custody as a suspect in the incident.
Suspect Detained
The suspect, Christopher Jones Jr., was detained from Henrico County by the local police, said the officials in a statement. The incident occurred when a bus returned to the school campus in Charlottesville from a trip, and the area was cordoned off along with operating a manhunt for hours. Finally, after Jones was caught from eighty miles east of the spot, the lockdown order was lifted by the authorities. He was caught by a policeman while driving to the east of Henrico in a vehicle.
Identity and Motive
The motive of the attack is yet unclear, according to the police. Jones was himself a student of the University of Virginia and a former football player of the same.
The Victims
Devin Chandler, D’Sean Perry, and Lavel Davis Jr. lost their lives, whereas the wounded students are admitted at UVA Medical Center. One is critical, and the other is stable, said UVA President Jim Ryan.
One of the injured students was Michael Hollins, a junior at the University and a running back for the football team. The bullet got lodged into Holins’ stomach, but he is likely to recover soon, as his father informed.
The School is Mourning
The whole school, including the foot Add Form ball team, coach, and athletics director, was saddened by the incident.
Athletics director Carla Williams said the school can never forget the students who left the world without fulfilling their aspirations. They paid their condolence to the families of the victims.
Shooting Continues
US school grounds and college campuses have witnessed at least sixty-eight such incidents this year, and at least one person, except the shooter, was shot in each incident.
