World leaders are meeting each other in Indonesia’s Bali for the G-20 summit, which is so far overshadowed by only one happening: the Russia-Ukraine war.
The summit’s agenda may be diversified, but at the beginning, world leaders showed their concerns over the war situation and urged them to find a solution.
Zelensky addressed G-20
Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky, while addressing G-20 leaders virtually, said that the war must end now. He also strongly criticized the Russian gesture of blackmailing the world with nuclear threats.
The president provided a pathway to end the conflict and asked Russia to exit from Ukraine after compensating for the damages done. He also called for a conference with world leaders to maintain peace and security and prevent the re-occurrence of any such aggression in the future. Implementation of anti-war measures and a document stating the end of war signed by all countries is necessary, said Zelensky.
Putin is not attending the summit and sent his Foreign Minister to Bali instead.
Rishi Sunak’s speech
Rishi Sunak, the new UK PM, said that only one man could end all this, and he is Vladimir Putin himself. Sunak condemns the Russian invasion as well as nuclear threats in his address.
What French president said?
Emmanuel Macron, the French president, pleaded with China to intervene so Russia would agree to negotiate with Ukraine.
Macron urged Xi Jinping to convey the message to Putin so that he avoids further escalation and comes to a negotiation.
Others also condemned the war
FIFA president Gianni Infantino called for a ceasefire during Qatar World Cup 2022.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi also urged maintaining peace and ending the war through diplomatic negotiation.
A draft communique of the G-20 summit states that the Russia-Ukraine war has seriously impacted the global economy, apart from human suffering and most G-20 members condemn the war.
