Vladimir Putin responded to the bridge bombing that occurred on Saturday, and it was his maiden response publicly after US President told Democratic supporters that Putin’s nuclear threat was real.
Bomb attack on the bridge
Ukraine’s bombing attack on the bridge that connects Russia with Crimea was like terrorist activity, said the Russian President. Putin added that this terrorist act aimed to demolish his country’s civilian infrastructures, which are critically important.
Until 2014, Crimea was a part of Ukraine, and Putin annexed Crimea in 2014 by force. The bridge, the only way to physically connect it with Russia, serves as a route for Russian troops to send weapons and other supplies to Ukraine during the war. So it is another setback for Moscow. The Russian military is not having a good time in Ukraine, and the shortage of supplies and other things has led numerous Russian troops to flee towns and cities in retreat.
Putin’s threat and Biden’s reactions
Russia has been facing setbacks continuously in recent times, so a nuclear threat from Putin can’t be taken lightly. US President Joe Biden declared that they have a direct nuclear threat, and the situation is worsening daily. Admiral Kirby also agreed with Biden in this context. Mark Esper, ex-US Secretary of Defense, called Biden’s remarks overstatement. He said it might scare people and even demean the capabilities of the USA to maintain peace and safety. Jerry Boykin, a retired Lt. Gen, differed with Biden as well. He said he didn’t think Putin would use nuclear weapons anytime soon.
War situation continues
On the other side, shelling and fighting continue to take place in Ukraine. Russian rockets destroyed parts of residential areas in Ukraine’s Zaporizhzhia, taking thirteen lives and injuring over fifty people. The defense minister of Ukraine urged the Russian soldiers to stop the war.
