Ensuring Safety and Security of Your BT Mail Account

Subscribers of broadband services of the BT group, one of the largest British telecommunications companies headquartered in London, automatically gain access to BT mail, a free email service. Subscribers must use their BT ID to log in to MyBT and set up the free email account. Like any other email account, when you use it for the first time, you can create an email address followed by @bitinternet.com. Users can access their email accounts by logging on to the BT website and heading on to the page bt.com/email. The free email service is for all users, and even a Premium email service is available to users willing to pay.

    Start Using BT Mail

BT Group plc is the company’s name, the erstwhile British Telecom. It provides a wide range of telecom services, including fixed voice and data services, managed IT networks, broadband services, mobile services, connectivity, and television. It would be right to say BT can be a one-stop shop for all your telecom needs. Regardless of the type of services that users avail of, they can create an email account on the platform. It used to be accessible by using their BT ID, but of late, there have been some changes. There is a clear demarcation between your BT mail login and your BT account. And you have to log in separately to these accounts.  Your BT ID helps you log on to your BT account while the email credentials are different, and you can access the email account directly by visiting the page bt.com/email.

However, to check your bill or manage your email, you can use your BT ID (which is your email address) and log in to bt.com/login

    Switching between Email Accounts

BT used to allow users with multiple email accounts to switch between them seamlessly, but this facility is no longer available. Now, multiple email account holders must log into each account separately. The company is moving in the right direction, intending to fortify user security.

Check the Security of Your Email Account

Users must stay vigilant about what is happening to their email accounts to ensure they are secure. BT maintains round-the-clock surveillance and tracks email accounts closely so that the moment they detect any suspicious activity on any account, they immediately block access to protect the account. If your email settings undergo any change, users will immediately receive a notification about it through a banner message displayed on the screen.

However, if users detect any suspicious activity that might have escaped BT’s notice, they should run a virus scan before changing their password. In addition, users of the Broadband package should run the BT Virus Protect that comes with the package and then proceed to change the password. However, mobile device users should run a virus scan only and then change the password.

     Security Checks to Perform

    • Check the contact folder for any addition or deletion of contact. Delete any contact that you don’t recognize. Check the trash folder to salvage any useful contact that might have been deleted through oversight or otherwise. If any contact disappears, you can arrange restoration to BT.
    • Activate the Manage Email tile by clicking on it to check for any email addresses created on your account that you want to get rid of. After viewing all the email addresses, delete those you don’t recognize.
    • Users can set up mailbox rules to protect their accounts. If any rules were in place earlier, these are now deactivated. Users can view the list of rules and activate only the relevant ones while deleting those they cannot.
    • Modifying the auto-reply and auto-forwarding rules helps to enhance the security of your email account.
    • Updating your personal security details is another way to secure your email account.

To ensure the robust security of your BT mail account, you must install BT Web Protect and BT Virus Protect on your PC and run antivirus checks regularly. You should also use only a safe internet connection and be watchful of phishing emails that ask you to provide personal details such as passwords and account numbers.
