Eternals: Disney Projects $75M Box Office Opening

Despite a star-studded cast and an Oscar-winning director, the new marvel and Superhero movie “Eternals” is expected to fall short of its predecessors when it gets released this weekend. Walt Disney Co. expects roughly $75 million opening in the weekend box office in North America.

The weekend figures would make this new release the third or fourth biggest opening in 2021, close to Disney’s ” Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings”.

Sony Corp.’s “Venom: Let There Be Carnage” at $ 90 million was the biggest debut this year, followed by “Black Widow” at $80 million. ‘Eternals” will be released only in theatres first like “Venom” and “Shang-Chi”, unlike Black Widow, which was released on Disney’s streaming service simultaneously.

Opening on November 5, the Salma Hayek, Angelina Jolie Starrer “Eternals” is about a team of superheroes on a special mission on Earth. Chloe Zhao, the Oscar winner winning director of “Nomadland”, is directing this film.

As per Rotten Tomatoes, the reviews of the film are by far the worst of any movie made in Disney’s stable with a 56% positive rating.

According to Bloomberg News, October 2021 was the best month after February 2020 for Movie theatres, but this was partially due to many delayed movies being released.

Disney Marvels studios had an average of $100 million or more opening for its superhero movies though the expectation of Disney “Eternals” is somewhat in the range.

Traditionally November has always been a slow moviegoing month ahead of the blockbuster movies releases in the December Holidays. In 2013, Marvel’s movie “Thor: The Dark World” got an $85 million weekend opening.
