Delta Airlines has cut around 90 flights before Christmas, while United Airlines has canceled more than 100 flights on Friday.
In an email Thursday, United Airlines Holding Inc. said that the jump in Covid-19 variant omicron numbers had affected the flight crew members and ground personnel. The cancellation of flights is due to various factors that include omicron and potential inclement weather in specific routes.
On the other hand, Delta Airlines said in an emailed statement on Friday that it had exhausted all its resources options. They include aircraft and crew substitutions and rerouting of flights to cover the scheduled flying of the airline before finally canceling around 90 flights. Delta is still operating around 3100 flights on the day before Christmas. The spike of Omicron cases nationwide this week directly impacted the people who run the airline operations, as per a memo from United Airlines.
The heaviest time for travel is during the holiday season. The security administration of the transportation department was anticipating December 22 and December 23 to be the busiest travel date before Christmas, both locally and nationally. The post-holiday travel on January 2 and 3 was expected to be the most crowded.
Unfortunately, United Airlines said that they had to cancel some flights, and they notified their customers in advance and stopped them from coming to the airport. The airlines apologized for the disruption and are working hard to reschedule the flights and rebook the passengers as many as possible to get to their homes for the holidays.
