Bloomberg News reports that severe thunderstorms have bombarded the northeast of the United States, which includes New York City on Sunday. This has unleashed a deadly flood in Pennsylvania thereby putting a halt to all operations at many airports. There have been tornado watches across New England.
After the effect of the floods
Due to the floods, at least five people have lost their lives and two children have been missing. Floodwater ripped across Bucks County and north of Philadelphia on Saturday.
The saturated soil due to Saturday’s rain could lead to even flooding getting worse across regions of the East Coast. Ashton Robinson Cook, a forecaster associated with the US Weather Prediction Center, revealed this.
High Alert Sounded
Warnings and flood watching turned about right from Virginia to Maine. There are tornado alerts for many states like Rhode Island, Connecticut, New Hampshire, and Massachusetts. In New Hampshire, an event related to NASCAR was deferred due to severe weather conditions.
Aviation affected.
The three major airports in the New York City area halted all flights. The authority announced the same on Sunday afternoon due to the thunderstorms. An airport at Long Island stopped all operations as well. Hundreds of flights have been put on hold due to the severe weather.
How much rainfall is expected?
A vast area including New York is expected to receive as much as 3 inches of rainfall, equivalent to 7.6 centimeters of rain. On the other hand, some areas have meanwhile received as much as 6 inches of rainfall.
The New York City Emergency Management Department issued a travel advisory on Sunday. According to this warning, there might be urban flooding and the authority have urged people of New York to restrict their travel and stay indoors.
What do tornado watches indicate?
According to the National Weather Service, Tornado watches imply that there can be dangerous storms reaching suburbs from the northeastern parts of New York up to southern Maine.
While the northeastern region is struggling with severe weather and air quality has plunged to unhealthy levels in Chicago, smoke from the Canadian forests fire is spreading through the Midwest and the Great Plains.
Authorities have asked the residents to limit travel so that they can stay away from air pollution. People with respiratory disorders and pulmonary illness, small children, and the elderly population are the most vulnerable.
The authority has alerted the citizens about the air quality across the parts of Wyoming, Montana, Missouri, Ohio, Nebraska, Minnesota, Illinois, Iowa, Indiana, Michigan, and Wisconsin.
As far as Canada is concerned, air quality alerts issued warnings in British Columbia, Quebec, Alberta, Nunavut, Yukon, and Saskatchewan.
