    About D Gukesh: Winner of The Chess World Championship

    After Praggnanandhaa, D Gukesh emerged as the winner of the Chess World Championship 2024. This was a winning moment for India as the championship was won by an Indian.

    Gukesh began his chess journey at the age of seven, which is known to be very late as somebody who would be competing in the World Championship as compared to many prodigies. Before the championship, Gukesh was introduced to chess by his school, which is none other than a part of the Velammal group of schools in Chennai.

    This school is also known for producing many talents such as that of Praggnanandhaa R. Mr. Bhaskar, Gukesh’s first coach of chess, helped him become a FIDE-rated player. This was in just six months of Gukesh starting his chess journey.

    What Happened Then?

    Gukesh D did not stop after that as it is quite evident that he won the Chess world championship in 2024. After becoming a FIDE-rated player, under the coaching of Mr. Vijayanand, Gukesh, at the 2015 Asian School Chess Championships, won the under-9 section. He also earned the candidate master which is also known as the CM title. Soon, at the Asian School Chess Championships, Gukesh won five gold medals.

    He went on to win the under-12 individual classical, rapid, and blitz categories. This was as done as well as the under-12 team of other rapid and blitz events. In the same year, Gukesh secured the under-12 title at the World Youth Chess Championship, thus finishing with an impressive 10/11 points. Gukesh’s next big break came in 2017. In this, he earned the title of International Master in March 2017. This happened at the 34th Cappele-la-Grande Open. 

    The Victory Of The Chess World Championship

    Gukesh thus became the youngest-ever winner of the candidates, and this made him go forward to the Chess world championship. This was a winning moment for Gukesh D as he had always dreamed of achieving this title since he was a kid.

    Plus, Gukesh D’s father, Dr. Rajinikanth, an ENT surgeon who had been anxiously following the match on his mobile phone, was overcome with emotion when his son won the Championship.

    Koneru Humpy regained the women’s World rapid chess championship after a gap of five years on Sunday (December 29, 2024). The 37-year-old from Vijayawada finished with 8.5 points after beating Indonesia’s Irene Sukandar in the final round in New York.

    Women: 1. Koneru Humpy (Ind) 8.5 points; 2-7. Ju Wenjun (Chn), Kateryna Lagno (Rus), Tan Zhongyi (Chn), D. Harika (Ind), Alexandra Kosteniuk (Swi) and Afruza Khamdamova (Uzb); 8-10. Bibisara Assaubayeva (Kaz), Irine Sukandar (Ina) and Stavroula Tsolakidou (Gre) 7.5.
