Bill Gates Donated $1.2 Billion to Combat Polio

Bill Gates rarely backs down from a challenge. After experiencing what he termed “setbacks” last summer, the billionaire philanthropist seemed agitated. On July 13, he tweeted that multiple significant global disasters over the last several years have left many people depressed and questioning if the earth is meant to get even worse.

Donation From Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation

Bill Gates seems to have the strength and determination to accomplish his social battles back a few months later. Therefore, he just pledged an additional $1.2 billion to end polio. On Sunday in Berlin, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation announced its donation to the Global Polio Eradication Program. Bill Gates tweeted – “We can #EndPolio and build a safer world by working together again.” In an interview with Bloomberg, Gates stated that they are highly focused. According to him, surrendering would result in the paralysis of hundreds of thousands of children.

The fund will doubly help combat this disease, which recently surfaced in areas where it was believed to have vanished. A comeback would put decades’ worth of investment totaling billions of dollars in danger.

A resurgence of polio in New York

One hour north of Midtown Manhattan in Rockland County, New York, a polio case was discovered last summer. According to New York State and County health authorities, the patient was hospitalized after displaying severe symptoms involving paralysis.

The World Health Organization issued a warning in June after discovering sewage specimens from London containing a form of poliovirus. In rare instances, it can infect people but not those who have received the vaccine. Those who are not immunized can result in severe sickness and paralysis.

The World Health Summit on October 18 in Berlin, Germany, will co-host a pledge event. India’s victory over the poliovirus demonstrated to the rest of the world the importance of tenacity and cooperation in the fight to #EndPolio.
