Born to Ester Mezza Gutierrez and Manuel Jose Hoyos Toro on September 29, 1942, in Bogota, Colombia, Anna Mercedes Hoyos spent her entire life in the city. She started taking painting lessons from her early childhood that continued through her school days till completing secondary schooling at Colegio Marymount, Bogota. While at school, she used to make trips to various countries such as the USA, Mexico, and Europe to familiarize herself with the art and culture of those countries. Later, she enrolled at the University of the Andes to learn visual arts under the tutelage of stalwarts like Luciano Jaramillo, Marta Traba, Juan Antonio Roda, and Armando Villegas but left the course unfinished.
She married an architect Jacques Mosseri Hane in 1967, and Ana, their only daughter, was born in 1969. Her collection is kept at the United Nations University in Tokyo and in the archives of the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture.
