American Bulldog: Breed History and Information

We always need a buddy in life, and sometimes all we need is a pet dog to be around (read more). If you’re looking for a companion, there are several breeds to choose from. These days, the American Bulldog has been one of the most popular among them.

This dog breed provides both companionship and labor. They’re soft and sensitive but also powerful and persistent. If properly trained and cared for, American Bulldogs may make fantastic family pets.

    The History of American Bulldog

The modern American Bulldog was historically the descendants of the Old English Bulldogs. This breed is a type of large utility dog that was bred to work on the farm. In the 17th century, they served a role as a working bulldog, with various tasks including farm work, stock dogs, and hog dogs in the United States.

With their white coat, they were first named the English white bulldog or the white English Bulldog. Although they didn’t have the usual sour mug face of their ancestors, it was called bulldog. And they are called bulldogs for a reason! They are considered all-around dogs, and their appearance screams loud about it. They are solid and sturdy, and they have the mind of an independent dog capable of learning a lot of vigorous stuff.

However, the American Bulldog has almost been extinct after World War II. But thanks to the breeder, John D. Johnson, he revived the breed that we know today. Last November 11, 2019, the AKC added the American Bulldog breed to the FSS.

    Physical Characteristics

The American Bulldog is undeniably attractive. With a large chest and tucked-in waist, it resembles a heavy Boxer dog.

The wrinkled jowls that most people identify with the breed may not be present in American bulldogs. They have a giant forehead and tiny upside-down V-shaped ears that dangle on either side of their cap. Because their fur is carefully clipped and short, and you can see their warm and round brown eyes, you may fall even more in love with this dog breed.

Furthermore, American bulldog breeds are about 2 feet tall at the shoulder and have a square head on a solid neck. Their feet are spread wide apart, and they have a large muscle chest. They’re robust and always ready to go, as evidenced by their tiny and short legs and tail. If you want the shorter version of this breed, English bulldog can be one of your choices.

    Temperament

Perhaps this dog breed is one of those breeds that have received awful stereotypes. Often, they were thought to be ferocious and dangerous. But in fact, the ones to blame for this are those irresponsible dog owners. Contrary to what other people may think, the American bulldog is an affectionate household pet. With proper training, dogs will certainly be kind and good to everyone.

When you own this dog breed, you can expect loyalty, protection, and companionship.

If you are wondering, they are also great with kids and other pets. They’re brave, and they can protect you at all times. In fact, the American Kennel Club (AKC) characterizes this dog breed as “kind but courageous, and friendly but dignified.” Since its bull-baiting days, this breed has made great strides and is now the 5th most popular dog breed in the United States!

    Grooming

Grooming your American Bulldog is a simple process. This breed doesn’t have a long coat, and thus, he does not need to be bathed frequently. But if they become unclean and muddy, then a wash should be required. Their coat grows no longer than an inch, making it very easy to groom. You might just have to brush their coat routinely to keep their coat clean and shiny.

Also, you should cut their nails every few weeks and clean their ears once a month or as needed. And brushing their teeth on a regular basis is recommended to avoid dental problems.

    Training

For the training of your bulldog, regulations and routines must be set for your pet to behave well in your home or on farms. Right from the puppy stage from toilet training till your dogs become older, you should keep an eye on them and train them. They require a firm yet caring presence of you as an owner to establish and maintain appropriate boundaries. They are more likely to be handled both inside and outside of their surroundings if exposed to practical training methods, other dogs, and people. To harness the American Bulldog’s activity, it’s critical to provide early socialization and puppy training courses.

    Health Concerns About American Bulldog

    • Obesity

This is one of the most common problems in American Bulldogs (link: https://www.pethealthnetwork.com/dog-health/dog-diet-nutrition/7-reasons-why-dog-obesity-dangerous). Often, if he’s given the opportunity, they can go overboard with his food intake. To avoid this, you must limit his portions. Give him a well-balanced diet in addition to adequate exercise.

    • Thyroid Problems

When a dog’s thyroid does not produce enough hormones that regulate his metabolism, he is said to be hypothyroid. Suppose your dog is experiencing signs like lethargy, exercise intolerance, obesity, and increased shedding. In that case, you must have him checked by a vet to address the problem as soon as possible.

    • Overheating

On hot days, overheating and heat stroke are pretty standard in bulldogs. And it may only take a minute or two for him to suffer. To avoid this, you must keep him hydrated at all times and make a cold and fresh environment for him. In most cases, you might require opening your air conditioning unit for your pet to cool down.
