Amazon started laying off people on Tuesday in its administrative and tech divisions. As per LinkedIn posts from workers who claimed to have been impacted, the corporation informed staff in several divisions, notably Alexa and the Luna cloud gaming operation, that they would be let go.
Amazon’s Plan
Amazon plans to remove around 10,000 positions, mainly in the retail, technology, and Human Resources industries. The figure is still erratic since several teams are carrying out the cuts. According to a person aware of the development who requested to remain anonymous out of respect for their employer’s privacy, Amazon had not distributed any company-wide communications regarding the anticipated layoffs, which angered staff members.
Number of Employees
So far, it has avoided widespread layoffs by allowing workers to shift to other departments inside the business and by project closures. The layoffs reflect a sharp turnaround for Amazon. Less than a year ago, it struggled to fill its warehouses in a competitive labor market. But it was still engaged in a hiring frenzy motivated by the pandemic. Between the end of 2019 and 2021, it almost doubled the number of employees worldwide, going from 798,000 to 1.6 million.
After years of unregulated development, job layoffs severely impact the tech industry. Facebook parent Meta lost 13% of its workforce. Twitter, Salesforce, Shopify, and Stripe have reported more layoffs.
