Workplace Collaboration: The Need for Peaceful Cohabitation within a Workplace

    The world and society are constantly changing. Production services are becoming more and more complex and sophisticated. Newer technologies are being introduced every day and becoming an integral part of our daily lives. We are now confronting newer challenges such as energy sustainability or global warming. Our old ways of problem-solving are becoming obsolete. Due to the increasing complexity of our needs and the problems that our lifestyle generates, it is necessary to take a holistic approach to problem-solving.

    Benefits of Collaboration in the Workplace:

    It is now time to Establish Effective Workplace Collaboration and Teamwork Goals for many Reasons. 

    To enable collaboration in the workplace, the first step would be to identify the possible ideological barriers that could take place within the teammates. In the first place, it would help to be aware that collaboration always happens between people, and therefore good communication and understanding are vital for its success. Gathering different people means gathering different perspectives, and when people feel strongly about their ideas, it is very easy to pass on from a healthy discussion to an argument.


    The need for an Enabler to Establish Workplace Collaboration

    Therefore all the members must take an open-minded and respectful approach to a discussion. But that does not always happen. If the communication is not channeled, there will always be negative comments. There would be people monopolizing the conversation and trying to impose their ideas. Sometimes two professionals can even argue while trying to say the same thing. A professional might even not participate just because they do not feel in control of the subject and the said person is afraid of the other’s reaction to his ignorance.

    Listening to others can sometimes be very difficult, and it is then that parallel conversations start to take place. To assure the excellent progress of the dialogue, it is necessary to have the presence of an enabler, which is essential, a person who can channel the communication.

    The need to Establish Collaboration in the Workplace Among Team Members:

    Carrying out a project does not only rely on ideating together. There are two main aspects of the team to be established- firstly, the member’s contribution and their role within the group People need to know what they are meant to do, how, who, and what for? If those roles are not well distributed, people tend to disperse their efforts and lose track. The group might ultimately achieve the result, but it would waste resources.

    The lack of understanding in the contribution to be played is a common cause of discontent within a team and in collaboration in the workplace. For instance, to believe that our input will have a more significant impact on the outcome than it would have can damage the project’s progress and usually leads to frustration and unnecessary competitiveness. All the team members are individuals with their backgrounds, goals, motivations, and agendas. It is essential to identify what everyone expects to achieve with their participation in a project and assure that those reasons fit into the global aims of the job. In a big project, one individual’s job profile might be subordinated to the main domain, primarily as support and without much voice in the overall work. If this is not settled down from the beginning, it is probable to end up in a pickle mid-way.

    The Discrepancy between Self and Team:

    Another obstacle for the good dynamics of the team is the discrepancy between self-perception and external perception. This difference in perception can bring confusion and misunderstandings. Research shows that the team has a solid opinion about the rest of the members. Suppose every individual member of the group is asked about the personal and professional qualities of the rest of the colleagues. In that case, they will have a very similar opinion about their teammates. That concludes that the team’s perception is correct, whether it matches with the self-perception or not. That is why providing a framework for feedback is very important.

    Conclusion:

    To say that Interdisciplinary thinking vis-a-vis teamwork and collaboration in the workplace as a business strategy has great potential would be an understatement. It is becoming a need because of the new challenges that the world presents and the obsolete way of problem-solving that is being used. It is the best path to innovation, and it can help save time and resources. Communication and understanding are imperative, and the excellent coordination of the roles and contribution of the different areas.
