Sumitomo and Nissan Partner to Push for a Carbon-Free Japanese Localities

    Article Overview

Trading giant Sumitomo Corp. has teamed up with Nisan Motor to work with local authorities in Japan in providing a carbon-free environment by offering planning and consultations for mobility and energy services.

In a joint statement Wednesday by the two giants, they, along with auto leasing company Sumitomo Mitsui Auto Service, are planning to offer their expertise to municipalities lacking the personnel and knowledge to plan and roll out renewable energy

They will collaborate with the local government to introduce car-sharing systems, electric vehicles, and electricity obtained from renewable sources for local businesses and residents.

This important announcement comes on the back of Japan pledging to achieve net-zero carbon emission by 2050. The COP 26 climate change summit was held in the UK at the end of October and beginning November 2021.

The thrust toward achieving green is spreading to local levels in Japan, with around 500 villages, wards, towns, and cities, including Tokyo, have committed to achieving the target to become carbon neutral in the next three decades.

Chief Executive Officer of Nissan, Makoto Uchida, said that they would fully support the local government’s de carbonizations initiatives as a company.

On its own, Nissan wants to make its manufacturing plant completely carbon neutral by 2050. It also plans to sell electricity generated from 100 % renewable energy to its employees in Japan starting from the next fiscal year as per an announcement by the company Wednesday.

Following the results of the field tests, Nisan will identify partners to offer power plans with attractive pricing to the owners of Nissan EVs such as leaf and its new model Ariya.
