The news has been doing rounds that the Super Nintendo World which is situated in Japan is due for expansion in 2024. Nintendo news confirmed in its press release that the Nintendo-owned Super Mario-based amusement theme park in Japan would be expanded and would hereafter include a section on the popular Donkey Kong. The extended portion would as usual be owned by Universal Studios Japan and have almost seventy percent of the park based on the increasingly popular Donkey Kong segment.
Super Nintendo World Donkey Kong: How is it going to pan out?
The Super Nintendo World Japan situated under Universal Studios Tokyo has set out to have a section on the Donkey Kong part of Super Mario. It is said to include a roller coaster ride which would include the customers having a cohesive interactive experience. This section would also include themed merchandise based on the Donkey Kong game and food parks based on it as well. Nintendo informed in its press release that “Guests will be able to take a walk on the wild side through the lush jungles where Donkey Kong and his friends live.“ Nintendo further declared in its press release that the Donkey Kong area could prove to be “a game-changer that combines the innovative technology and globally popular approach to theme park entertainment of Universal with the creativity of Nintendo.”
“I am very happy to be able to make the world of Donkey Kong a reality following the world of Mario,” says Nintendo’s Shigeru Miyamoto, who created the Donkey Kong and Mario characters. “I am looking forward to creating a thrilling Donkey Kong experience with the amazing team at Universal. It will take some time until it is completed, but it will be a unique area for not only people who are familiar with Donkey Kong games but for all guests.”
The new area is planned to open in 2024, at which point hopefully it’ll be actually possible to travel to Japan. Nintendo-themed areas are also in the works for the Orlando, Hollywood, and Singapore Universal Studios parks. With the addition of the Donkey Kong area, Super Nintendo World at Universal Studios Japan will increase in size by approximately 70%.
History:
Nintendo is especially known for its Super Mario game. Nintendo first started off by introducing 8 bit and 16-bit games in the nineties and probably every 90’s kid would be familiar with the tell-tale music of Super Mario saving the princess from the clutches of danger. The Donkey Kong franchise under Super Nintendo began as a small arcade game in the year 1981 and gained immense popularity almost immediately. Because Donkey Kong managed to capture the hearts of fans all around the world, Nintendo world took this decision to include a section on Donkey Kong. Ever since its inception in 1981, the Donkey Kong video game series has continued to develop various games in the Donkey Kong section which included Wii, the Super Nintendo Entertainment System, and other games such as Nintendo Switch. The series has statistically sold over 70 million units all over the world, as per the data received until the month of March 2021.
The President and CEO of Universal Studios Japan, J.L. Bonnier, made a statement about the new Donkey Kong section in Super Nintendo World:
Super Nintendo World has helped in creating a whole other level of entertainment around the theme park and has rapidly become an exciting experience and something that is inevitable for the guests of the theme park. ”We are thrilled to continue working with Nintendo as we fulfill our vision to bring their characters and stories to life. Our new Donkey Kong-themed area will bring even more excitement and fun to the world of Super Nintendo experience”.
