    Tencent Holdings Corporate Governance

    The biggest stakeholder of Tencent is Prosus (the lion’s share is held by Naspers) which is the proprietor of a 30.99% stake. Nonetheless, the co-founder of the company, Ma Huateng, possesses a substantial stake in it.

    Presently, the Tencent Binhai Mansion serves as the head office of Tencent Holdings. Another name of the venue is the Tencent Seafront Towers. It is situated in the Nanshan District of Shenzhen, a city in China. Besides its head office in Shenzhen, the company also has administrative centers in Shanghai, Beijing, Guangzhou, and Chengdu.

    The company features an undivided board of directors comprising Ma Huateng, CEO, Co-Founder, and Chairman of the organization (also called Pony Ma), Martin Lau, President and Executive Director of Tencent, Charles Searle, and Jacobus “Koos” Bekker of Naspers, both non-executive directors and Iain Bruce, Li Dongsheng, Yang Siushun, and Ian Stone, all autonomous non-executive directors.

    Ma Huateng 

    Ma Huateng is one of the Co-Founders of Tencent Holdings Ltd. and also serves as the Chief Executive Officer and Chairman of the Board of Directors.

    Also known in the name of Pony Ma, Huateng co-established Tencent Holdings Ltd. in 1998. He has the lead role in the planned growth, general supervision, and administration of the company. Earlier, Huateng headed the R&D team for the Internet pagination scheme with China Motion Telecom Development Limited that is a telecom products and services supplier in the country.

    Ma has a B.Sc degree from Shenzhen University with a specialization in Computer and Applied Engineering.

    Martin Lau 

    Martin Lau serves as the President and Executive Director of the company. In 2005, Lau became a part of Tencent Holdings Ltd. as Chief Strategy and Investment Officer. He was entrusted with the responsibility for business planning, investiture, investor relations, and merger and acquisitions. 

    In 2006, Lau was elevated to the position of the President of Tencent Holdings for handling the routine functioning of the organization. In 2007, Martin got the appointment of the Executive Director of the BoD.

    Before joining Tencent, Lau served as an executive director of the investment banking segment of Goldman Sachs (Asia) LLC. He was the COO (Chief Operating Officer) of the Telecommunication, Media, and Technology Group of the company as well.

    Earlier, Martin had been employed with Mckinsey & Company, Inc. in the capacity of an administration advisor. Lau has a B.Sc degree from the University of Michigan in Electrical Engineering, an M.Sc degree from Stanford University in Electrical Engineering, as well as a Master of Business Administration degree from Northwestern University’s Kellogg Graduate School of Management.

    Xu Chenye (Daniel Xu)

    Xu Chenye is one of the co-founders of Tencent and currently serves as the Chief Information Officer (CIO) of the organization.

    Xu is one of the co-founders of the company in 1998. As the Chief Information Officer of Tencent, Chenye supervises tactical planning and growth of the website attributes of the organization as well as consumer relations and communities.

    Earlier, Xu was employed with Shenzhen Data Telecommunications Bureau. This is the place that helped him acquire management skills in Internet supervision, software system planning, marketing, and sales.

    Chenye has a B.Sc degree from Shenzhen University in Computer Science and an M.Sc degree from Nanjing University in Computer Science.

    Ren Yuxin (Mark Ren)

    Ren Yuxin is the Chief Operating Officer of the company. He also serves as the President of the Platform and Content Group and Interactive Entertainment Group of the company. He was elevated to the position of COO in 2012 May. Yuxin became a part of the company in 2000. In 2005, he was elevated to supervise business processes, R&D, and sales and marketing of gaming merchandise for the Interactive Entertainment Business segment.  

    Since 2018, Ren has headed the Platform and Content Group of the company. Before joining this organization, Yuxin was employed with Huawei Technologies Co., Ltd.

    Ren has a B.Sc degree from the University of Electronic Science and Technology of China in Computer Science and Engineering and an Executive Master of Business Administration degree from CEIBS (China Europe International Business School).

    James Mitchell

    James Mitchell serves as the Senior Executive Vice President and Chief Strategy Officer of Tencent Holdings. Mitchell became a part of the organization in 2011. James has the responsibility for tactical planning and execution, investiture operations, mergers and acquisitions, as well as investor relations. Before working for Tencent, Mitchell served as a Goldman Sachs Managing Director in New York, heading the interactions, leisure and media research group of the bank which assessed leisure, Internet, and media firms worldwide.

It is a subsidiary company of Tencent Holdings and is based in the southern neighborhood of Hi-Tech Park in Shenzhen.
