With the prevailing scenario due to covid-19, many Americans have changed their retirement plans. As of October 2020, the US News & World Report declared a list that has the names of the best places to retire in the US for the years 2020 and now 2021.

A survey was carried out in August 2020 wherein 3000 plus people were asked about the factors that they would consider for living at a place post-retirement. These individuals that were questioned were either at the retirement age or approaching the same.

5. Lancaster, Pennsylvania

This place is known to have long stretches of farms, Lancaster, Pennsylvania is located about an hour west of Philadelphia. It is the fifth-best place to retire in 2020 and 2021. In 2018, this city was first in rank on US News’ retirement ranking. In 2020-2021, Lancaster is top in terms of health care and housing affordability with a median price at $215,975.

4. Naples, Florida

Also known as the “Sunshine State“, it is a much sought-after retirement spot aside from the bright sunny weather that it offers round the year. Naples has won a retirement score of 7.4 out of 10. As compared to the other Florida cities, Naples homes are less affordable with a median price of $326,000. Naples and other municipalities in Florida have homestead tax exemption applicable to the permanent residents of the place. And this lowers the taxable property value by $50,000. 

3. Port St Lucie, Florida

Port St Lucie, Florida has its location between Orlando and Miami and towards the north of Palm Beach. It grabbed third place in US News’ retirement ranking and earned a score of 7.4 out of 10. The high score can be attributed to healthcare and home affordability. A tempting place for sports lovers, in particular, sports fans are not unaware of the spring training site of New York Mets. It is also home to PGA Center for Golf Learning and Performance

2. Fort Myers, Florida

In 2019, Fort Myers was in the first position in terms of the best retirement cities, it has now shifted to second place with a score of 7.4 out of 10. As far as housing affordability is concerned, it earned 6.5 where the median home costing is $226,825. For healthcare, it scores only 5.9. As of August 2020, Lee County, the location for Fort Myers had 21,331 Covid-19 cases then. 

1. Sarasota, Florida

This is regarded as one of the best places to retire in 2021. It earned a score of 7.6 out of 10 on the US News’ retirement ranking. It is situated in southwest Florida and is known as the “circus city”. Housing affordability is good with median home prices at $227,754. It received 6.4 for healthcare. This city is a favorite among the elderly population. 31% of the residents of the city are above the age of 65 years. The median resident age here is 52.
