    Marriott International, Inc. was founded by Alice Marriott and J. Willard Marriott in 1933 after the Marriott Corporation splitting into “Host Marriott Corporation” and Marriott International, Inc. This American MNC engages in franchise and operation of hotels, timeshare properties, and residential. It has its headquarters in Bethesda, Maryland, U.S. The company operates through various segments of the business including Asia Pacific, North American Limited-Service, North American Full-Service, and other Internationals. Today, the company CFO is Kathleen K. Oberg; Stephanie Linnartz is the president; Anthony Capuano is the CEO and Bill Marriott is the Executive Chairman. It is present in 131 countries and has over 7000 properties, 30 brands, and more than 147 Million Loyalty members.

    History and Timeline of Marriott International

    1927-1956: A&W root beer stand is where it all began. Willard and Alice Marriott expanded this business of theirs in the muggy and hot summers of Washington D.C. by quenching people’s thirst. At a fair price, the company principle was to provide Good service and food

    1959: Key Bridge Marriott was opened

    1969: The company opened its first international property in Acapulco, Mexico

    1972: Partnered with Sun line to become the first lodging firm to enter the cruise business and the same year J.W Marriott became the company CEO

    1983: Marriott came up with business travelers lodgings with the first Courtyard Hotel

    1984: The first JW Marriott, named in honour of founder J. Willard Marriott, opened in downtown Washington, D.C.

    1987: With the opening of the first Marriott Suites Hotels and Fairfield Inn, it became the first company for lodging that offered a brands portfolio 

    1988: The first hotel to be western-managed in the east of Europe was opened in Warsaw. This was overall the 500th Hotel by Marriott

    1995: It acquired 49% of the Ritz Carlton Hotel Company

    1997: It acquired the Renaissance Hotel Group and the number of Marriott properties doubled internationally

    1997: It launched TownePlace Suites

    1998: SpringHill Suites by Marriott was launched

    1999: ExecuStay corporate housing company was acquired

    2004: The first Bulgari Hotels & Resorts property opened in Milan, Italy

    2008: Ian Schrager and Bill Marriott announced officially the EDITION brand.

    2009: Autograph Collection, which is a luxury and upscale independent hotel was launched

    2011: AC Hotels was launched

    Beyond 2012

    The company is on a mission to shape the future of travel through technology and innovation. From mobile check-in and lobby Great rooms to transforming the meeting experience with their Red Coat Direct app, they are focusing to improve the overall experience of their customers.

    2012: Arne Sorenson became the CEO and President of Marriott International. They acquired Gaylord Hotels Brand and added 5 hotels

    2013: MOXY HOTEL, a three-star and economy tier hospitality segment in Europe was launched. Also, the AC Hotel by Marriott which is designed focused was imported into America.

    2014: Protea Hotels’ Brands was acquired by Marriott International that led to the doubling of distribution in Africa

    2015:  Marriott International acquires Delta Hotels and Resorts®; Becomes the Largest Full-Service Hotelier in Canada.

    2016: Marriott International acquired Starwood Hotels & Resorts, creating the world’s largest hotel company with 5,700+ properties offering more than 1.1 million rooms across 30 brands in over 110 countries.

    2021: Anthony Capuano became the CEO and Stephanie Linnartz the President of Marriott International.
