The Best Social Media Platform to Market to Each Generation

    Article Overview

So, you are trying to put together a powerful digital marketing campaign. There are numerous tools that you have at your disposal; however, one of the most important is social media. Because there are hundreds of millions of people who use social media on a daily basis, this is a tool that you have to put to work for you as well. Social media is a powerful platform because most people have mobile devices in their pockets. They also get notifications related to social media. Therefore, you can have a personal relationship with individual customers and clients with the push of a button. On the other hand, there are countless social media platforms out there. You need to pick the ones that are best related to your target market. Which social media platforms work best for which generation?

    Baby Boomers

Baby boomers are individuals who were born between 1946 and 1964. If you are trying to reach this target market, your most important social media platform is going to be Facebook. The people who are most active on Facebook or individuals who are over the age of 50. Members of the older generation prefer reading and sharing articles with other people. Because Facebook is the perfect platform for sharing content that is based on text, it should come as no surprise that this generation loves Facebook. They are already invested in traditional media, so using informative content and concise messages are appealing to this generation.

Another social media platform you may want to use if you are trying to reach members of the older generation is Pinterest. Pinterest has a strong foundation and homeownership. With access to powerful spending statistics related to this generation, Baby Boomers love Pinterest. There is also a sharable text option on Pinterest, making it easy for them to discuss home improvement projects with their friends and family members. For a generation that is used to doing everything itself, Pinterest is a great option

    Generation X

Anyone who was born between 1965 and 1980 is a member of Generation X. Members of Generation X watched the internet developed. Therefore, they are bridging the gap between traditional forms of advertising and digital marketing. As a result, members of Generation X look for content both in text and video form. They are able to appreciate both traditional and new media. Their most popular social media platforms include Facebook, YouTube, and Twitter. Each of them has its benefits.

For example, members of Generation X love Facebook because it offers a wide variety of traditional media content that caters to older members of this generation. YouTube is an easy platform to use and delivers digital media using informative videos and short soundbites. Twitter caters to shorter forms of traditional media; however, there are also videos that are shared on Twitter. Therefore, Twitter falls somewhere between Facebook and YouTube. Anyone who is trying to reach members of Generation X should consider putting these three social media platforms to work for them.

    Millennials (Generation Y)

Anyone who was born between the years of 1981 and 1996 falls in the millennial generation. Also called Generation Y, this is a major focus of marketing professionals today. This generation is made up of young professionals who are eager to spend money and prioritize work-life balance. Because Millennials love technology, they are the first “digitally native generation.” Most members of this generation cannot imagine a world without the internet.

Because they are professionals when it comes to the internet, they are incredibly active on Facebook, YouTube, and Instagram. The vast majority of the customer journey is driven by online reviews when it comes to Millennials. Even though word-of-mouth recommendations still have their places, this usually comes in digital form. Therefore, YouTube, Instagram, and Facebook are great tools to reach this generation because of their opportunities to carry out a strategic advertising campaign.

In addition, Millennials are incredibly loyal. Once they find a company they like, they tend to stick to it. Therefore, many companies have found success using influencers to win over the loyalty of members of this generation. Then, they can not only acquire new customers but also keep old ones.

    Generation Z

Finally, Generation Z encompasses people who were born between the years of 1996 and 2012. Many members of the generation are still children. As a result, they have a unique experience as well. Many members of this generation grew up playing on their parents’ smartphones. Therefore, this generation prefers anything that is short, bright, and motion-based. With this in mind, it should come as no surprise that members of this generation love TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube. This generation is also drawn to be hyper-personalization that is available on these various platforms.

This generation wants to consume as much content as possible on social media. They also want to consume content in the shortest amount of time. Anything that is not interesting to them within the first three seconds is going to get thrown off to the side. They also make purchasing decisions quickly as well. Businesses have to keep this in mind when they are trying to develop content that is going to reach this younger generation. The shorter the content is, the better it is going to be. At the same time, the content also has to convince its target market to make purchasing decisions quickly.
