Vice President, BroadwayHD, Tom Kinney Shares His Success Story

Tom Kinney is the Vice President of Operations for BroadwayHD. Kinney’s extensive experience in the cable television industry provides a unique perspective for his role in the OTT (over the top) streaming world. He worked at Time Warner, rising to Division President for over twenty of his 30+ years with the company. Kinney is known for setting the standard in creating positive work environments to optimize productivity, generating multi-million dollar revenues, and achieving excellence in customer satisfaction. Tom Kinney has been recognized by the media and technology industries as a leader with multiple “Best In” and “Best Places to Work” honors for his accomplishments.

Tom Kinney speaks to Business Upside in this interview on his strategies behind managing the business, success tips, and motivation.

Business Upside [BU]: How did you get into this business?

Tom Kinney [TK]: I have experience with new product and technology deployments which led to a specific consulting project for BroadwayHD. After working closely with the BroadwayHD team, the founders, Stewart F. Lane and Bonnie Comley asked me to join their company as head of operations. I spent many years helping to build the cable tv business and I could see it shifting. BroadwayHD was an opportunity to be involved in the strategic planning of a company in the up-and-coming streaming industry.

BroadwayHD is an entertainment SVOD (subscription video on demand) service making Broadway shows accessible to the world through AppleTv, Chromecast, Roku, BroadwayHD on Amazon Prime and the web at www.BroadwayHD.com BroadwayHD is the world’s premier online streaming platform delivering over 350 premium full-length musicals and stage plays to an underserved global audience. I am celebrating my third work anniversary at BroadwayHD and I am glad that I made the move from cable tv to streaming.

[BU]: Have you ever turned down a client?

[TK]: I have always believed that my job has been to find a way to say, “yes”, but there have been projects that I have had to direct to other resources.

[BU]: What is unique about your business?

[TK]: Sustainability in the streaming business is unique but BroadwayHD is serving the existing Broadway fan and cultivating the next generation of Broadway fans by making Broadway accessible on the internet. The digital theatre experience is the gateway to the live stage experience, in other words, people who watch theatre online will buy tickets to the live stage shows. Sustaining and building the audience for the live stage shows is part of the BroadwayHD mission.

The demographic of the Broadway ticket buyer is 40 years old and older, while the majority of BroadwayHD subscribers is 18 to 34 years old. BroadwayHD is making Broadway shows accessible to the next generation of theatregoers.

BroadwayHD’s mission is two-pronged, its first mission is to be a great entertainment streaming service. Additionally, BroadwayHD is a member of the Broadway League and serves the live entertainment industry by promoting Broadway and West End shows. Digital capture has already become a component of the live theatre business and BroadwayHD is leading the industry by setting the standards for quality control of content, transparency with partners, and working with the many unions of the Broadway industry.

Tom Kinney speaks to Business Upside in this interview on his business strategies, success tips, and entrepreneurial motivation. Edited excerpts from the interview:

[BU]: How do you generate new ideas?

[TK]: BroadwayHD is an incredibly collaborative workplace. Everything is always “open for discussion”. Many ideas and opportunities come from the new technological developments that are occurring rapidly. To take advantage of these types of ideas and opportunities as well as to review and adopt new initiatives, we have a formal and informal process established and work with that process daily.

[BU]: If you had one piece of advice to someone just starting, what would it be?

[TK]: Never assume you know more than anyone in your organization. Find the job in your organization that is the most challenging every day. Aim to make every employee satisfied and happy with their job then apply that learning to all the employees/jobs in your organization.

[BU]: How do you define success?

[TK]: A successful business means that everyone is contributing. Creating jobs and careers that generate security, growth, and investment in your community – that is a success.

[BU]: Do you believe there is some sort of formula or pattern to become a successful Executive?

[TK]: A successful executive creates an environment where people are motivated to do their best work, feel engaged in the company mission, and are rewarded for their contributions.

[BU]: How do you market your business, and which method has been most successful?

[TK]: We rely heavily on social media and have found that method to be most effective in reaching the digital audience that we are targeting. Social media drives traffic to our website and builds our subscriber base and helps to grow brand awareness for BroadwayHD.

[BU]: What motivated you to become an Executive?

[TK]: I was driven by the desire to participate at a level that could develop the strategy and direction of the business. I have worked at different companies but I am at my peak motivation and happiest when I am fully engaged in operational activities that are goal-oriented. I find purpose in being part of the solution and being an executive provides me that purpose.

[BU]: Any other advice or comment which defines you?

[TK]: I believe in living a full life. Family, pets, giving back to the community, and hobbies have always been important parts of my life. Work and life balance are important for your physical and mental health. My advice is to make sure you are not focusing on work demands at the expense of your personal life.
