A gunman attacked a school in Russia, killing seventeen people and injuring twenty-four before taking their own life. He opened fire inside the school in Izhevsk city, located 600 miles from Moscow’s east.
The Incident
There were eleven children among the seventeen people being killed in the gunman firing, claimed the Udmurtia government. The injured persons included twenty-two children, informed an investigative committee. The gunman opened fire in School 88 with two pistols, which he got illegally.
The Gunman
The gunman, identified as Artyom Kazantsev (34), completed his graduation degree from the school he attacked in. His black t-shirt had Nazi symbols, according to the witnesses. But why he opened fire in the school was still unclear.
Kazantsev was registered as a psychiatric patient, according to the Udmurtia government. The investigators searched his residence and studied his personality to understand his motive. They are also checking on his ideologies and views, which are probably pro-Nazi.
President Expresses Condolence
Russian President Vladimir Putin expressed his grief on the incident. He ordered probes and instructed doctors and other concerned persons to reach the spot. He also wished speedy recovery of the wounded ones.
The school teaches children aged from six to seventeen. Soon after the incident, the school was vacant, and the officials cordoned the area.
Izhevsk, the central Russian country, resides around 640,000 people.
Earlier Incidents
The country is already undergoing an internal and external crisis because of the war against Ukraine. People inside Russia are protesting against the war, and several other countries have also cleared their stands against Russia.
Though Russian officials described this incident as unrestrained, it does not happen very often. Such an incident took place in Russia in April this year. In 2021, nine people were killed in a gunman attack on a school in Russia’s Kazan.
